Oscar Wilde: Spendthrift of Genius
Original post date: 23 May 1987
Rating: ✭✭✰✰
A very well done PBS-style Irish documentary about the life of Oscar Wilde. The film deals frankly and sympathetically with Wilde’s long love affair with the young Lord Alfred Douglas, which landed him in prison for being a “sodomite.” The film is generously laced with Wilde’s witty mots. (When asked what his religion was, Wilde replied, “I don’t believe I have any. I’m an Irish Protestant.”).
